The San Francisco School
Job Announcement
MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEACHER
Seventh-Eighth Grade Starts August 2010 (with summer prep time)

Overview of Position

The San Francisco School seeks a Middle School Math Teacher interested in strengthening mathematical reasoning and deepening conceptual understanding among seventh and eighth graders, while helping them develop sound skills and work habits. While the Middle School math curriculum is sound and newly developed, the school is currently working on “pushing” its math curriculum and approach down into the lower grades. We desire a teacher who is interested in collaborating with co-workers to continue scope and sequence work for the math program throughout the entire school. The Middle School Math Teacher also works cooperatively as part of the Middle School team that has the overall responsibility for 96 students. Teacher responsibilities outside the classroom include serving as an advisor to ten students, conducting parent-teacher conferences, participating in outdoor education trips, teaching periodic elective classes, writing high school recommendations, and sharing duties such as recess and tutorial supervision and chaperoning dances. All teachers also come together on a regular basis to collaborate, discuss best teaching practices, and hone professional skills.

Qualifications sought

We seek a talented teacher who can inspire students. Candidates must have strong preparation in mathematics (in particular the teaching of Algebra), have successful middle or high school teaching experience, and exhibit excellent communication skills.    Cultural competence and the ability to work collaboratively are essential. Candidates should be student-centered, practiced in differentiated instruction, and skilled at honing student skills. A teaching credential or a related MA degree and three years of successful work as a teacher are recommended.

Overview of School

The San Francisco School is an independent school, pre-K through eighth grade, with a commitment to a multicultural and inclusive community. Suitably characterized by one parent as an “urban school with a village atmosphere,” The School embraces San Francisco’s ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity. Our progressive approach to education encourages children to develop self-reliance, solid academic skills, creativity, and a sense of social justice. Students learn to think like disciplinarians in a field, consider big and central ideas, and are supported in seeking and developing their own passions. They graduate academically prepared, inquisitive, courageous, and eager for the challenges ahead.
