This is the last reminder about my summer workshops for math teachers.
* June 1 is the last day to take advantage of the early bird discount for my workshops in San Francisco (Visual Algebra and Hands-On Geometry. In between those, Kate Mackrell will offer a workshop on Cabri 3D.)
* There are still openings in the DC session of Visual Algebra.
* Find dates and other information below and on my Web site.
* Continuing Education Units for the workshops are available through USC.
* The workshops are sponsored by the Center for Innovative Teaching (CIT). There are other workshops in the same program, for school leaders and teachers of foreign language, physical science, oral history, Shakespeare, and service learning. If you bring a colleague to any CIT workshop, you each get an extra discount.
Act quickly!
Sincerely,
–Henri
PS: the Escape from the Textbook! network is another CIT project for math teachers.

Visual Algebra
with Henri Picciotto
Tuesday-Friday, June 22-25, 2010 (DC)
or Monday-Thursday, July 19-22, 2010 (SF)
9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
(Wednesday only til noon)
This three-and-a-half-day workshop is designed for middle and high school mathematics teachers who want to make algebra more accessible, richer and more fun. I will present a wealth of visual approaches to the teaching of algebra, including: Lab Gear manipulatives for basic symbol manipulation, geoboard lattices for slope and radicals, a powerful parallel axes representation for functions, intelligent use of technology, and three distinct visual paths to the quadratic formula. Topics range from Pre-Algebra to Algebra II. Activities complement the material in any textbook, whether reform or traditional.

To the Third Dimension with Cabri 3D!
with Kate Mackrell
Friday, July 23 (SF)
9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
In this one-day workshop, we will learn the basics of creating three-dimensional constructions with Cabri 3D. This will prepare participants for multiple three-dimensional applications: surface area and volume for geometry (including some interesting historical approaches); conic sections, planes, and vectors for precalculus; and volumes of revolution.

Hands-On Geometry
with Henri Picciotto
Monday-Tuesday July 26-27 (SF)
9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
In this two-day workshop for middle and high school teachers, I will present hands-on tools and activities. The tools include manipulatives (such as pattern blocks and geoboards) and puzzles (such as tangrams, pentominoes, and supertangrams). We will use interactive geometry software to extend the activities, and to work through a challenging and highly motivational construction unit. I will also present an authentic approach to proof, which tries to navigate a middle course between the too-abstract traditional curriculum and the insufficiently rigorous nature of some reform programs.
